Economic IssuesIn Guatemala, income has become extremely lopsided with the richest 20% of the population accounting for more than 51% of the country’s overall consumption. Over half of the population is below the poverty line and almost one-fourth of the population live in extreme poverty. This is caused by multiple corruption scandals and growing exacerbated fiscal pressures. Also, many of the big corporations and other country's' companies have began to take over the economy making it harder and harder for people to get out of poverty.
